Cataracts

Cataracts can cause blurry vision and sensitivity to light, impacting your ability to read and drive.  While cataracts can eventually cause blindness, this issue can be corrected through a safe and effective laser surgical procedure.  At Los Angeles Vision Institute in Los Angeles, CA, our team of expertly trained doctors can correct cataracts and improve your vision.

What are Cataracts?

The lens in your eye works much like the lens in a camera. It focuses light onto the retina, which then sends images to the brain, allowing you to see. A cataract is when your natural lens becomes cloudy and causes your vision to become blurry. If left untreated, it can lead to blindness.

Cataracts are a typical part of the aging process, which causes gradual clouding of your vision. However, it can also occur due to eye injuries, some diseases like diabetes, or medications.

At Los Angeles Vision Institute in Los Angeles, Dr. Jonathan Isaac Macy and Dr. Alexander Knezevic perform safe and effective laser cataract surgery using state-of-the-art technology and a variety of advanced intraocular lenses (IOL) to replace the cloudy natural lens and improve your eyesight.

Safe and Effective Treatment for Cataracts How Our Doctors Can Restore Your Vision

Our board-certified ophthalmologists remove the cloudy natural lens of the eye and position an intraocular lens, or IOL, in its place. This IOL is chosen to fit your visual needs for issues such as astigmatism, myopia, hyperopia, or presbyopia.

What to Expect During Laser Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery typically takes just 15 minutes.
Cataract surgery typically takes just 15 minutes.

Initial Exam

Before laser cataract surgery at our Los Angeles eye center, your doctor will examine and measure your eyes to determine the correct type and power of IOL for you. IOLs can be selected to correct near-sightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), irregular contour (astigmatism), and changes in the eye due to presbyopia.

Pre-Op

Patients will be advised to avoid certain medications and administer medicated eye drops as directed by the doctor. On the day of cataract surgery, patients should avoid eating or drinking. You will be provided with exact pre-op details during your consultation.

Anesthesia and Sedation

Topical anesthesia and IV sedation are used to ensure your comfort throughout the surgery. You should not feel any pain during your surgery.

Cataract Removal

Using a femtosecond laser, an incision of 3mm or less is made, which allows precise ultrasonic or laser liquefaction of the lens and its removal.

IOL Placement

A foldable IOL is then inserted through the incision to replace the natural lens that was removed. No stitches are required as the incision will seal itself. Cataract surgery is completed in about 15 minutes.

Post-Op

After surgery, a plastic shield will be placed over the eye for protection during recovery. Typically, patients leave with functional vision and minimal discomfort. There will be short-term limitations on exercise and wearing cosmetics, but most patients are back to their normal activities the next day. Your doctor will provide you with eye drops to prevent infection and speed up the healing process.
